Couples Moving from Abroad:
Key Points for Visa Acquisition
Couples Moving from Abroad
Once you clear the initial "COE application," the subsequent entry procedures go smoothly.
3 Steps to Entry
The Biggest Challenge: "Financial Stability"
If you have a long track record of living together abroad, proving this is relatively easy.
Since you have no base in Japan, you cannot obtain a tax certificate.
Carefully executing Step 1 is the key to a successful move.
The Japanese spouse simply returns home, but the foreign spouse will need to obtain a "Certificate of Eligibility (COE)" for new entry into Japan.
General Procedure Flow
- Certificate of Eligibility Application (Immigration):
The most important step. Eligibility for residence status is assessed. - Visa Application (Japanese Embassy abroad):
With the COE, this is generally approved unless there are special circumstances. - Entry & Residence Card Issuance:
You receive your residence card at the airport.
If the COE application (Step 1) is successfully approved, Steps 2 and 3 usually proceed without issues. Therefore, how carefully you handle Step 1 is the deciding factor.
Key Review Points
The three requirements for obtaining the COE are:
- Credibility of the marriage
- Financial stability
- Good conduct (no misconduct)
Marriage Credibility
For couples who have been married and living together abroad for many years, proving this tends to be relatively straightforward since they have plenty of photos and evidence.
Financial Stability (Caution!)
Since you have not had a base in Japan for a long time, in most cases you cannot obtain a "tax certificate". Additionally, not having a confirmed job in Japan can also be disadvantageous.
Even long-married couples can encounter difficulties due to the lack of Japanese income documentation. A careful explanation tailored to your individual circumstances is essential, so please consult with a specialist if you have any concerns.
